Stowaway premieres this Thursday, April 22 at Netflix with the claim of the stars Toni Collete and Anna Kendrick leading his cast. A new commitment to quality science fiction on the queen streaming platform for which I think fans of this genre should feel grateful.
Stowaway begins with the launch of the spacecraft Hyperion on mission to Mars. The crew is supposedly made up of 3 astronauts … Zoe (Anna Kendrick), David (Daniel Dae Kim) and Commander Barnett (Toni Collete). Shortly after starting their journey, already launched at high speed and without any possibility of return, they discover that there is an unexpected fourth passenger on the ship. It’s about Michael (Shamier Anderson), a maintenance worker who had an accident while overhauling the ship and was left unconscious in a difficult-to-access chute. This inconvenience will make them consider having to get rid of the surprise guest, since the ship is not prepared to keep all its occupants alive.

I would like to start by saying that despite being a quality film, very entertaining and that maintains tension during almost all its footage, to Stowaway he is missing something more of sediment, substance, subtext, elements that make you reflect a bit after viewing. I think that any science fiction film that wants to transcend time must offer something more. I will not ask to reach the levels of 2001: A Space Odyssey, but I did expect more depth as for example lately they have given us titles like The Arrival (2016), The Hole (2019), Ad Astra (2019), High Life (2018) or even Interstellar (2014).
Stowaway It is a fairly immersive trip, get you to abstract from everything and really share the trip with its 4 passengers. It is a film with few characters and with few locations, since almost everything happens inside the ship. Special mention to the only two scenes on the outside, which convey a lot of tension and suffering. Medal for the Brazilian director Joe Penna, of which I can recommend his previous work, Artic (2018), at least to all of you who are lovers, like me, of survival stories in nature. If you want a little more hype, the film is interpreted almost exclusively by the divine Mads Mikkelsen.
The story is not very original, nor does it include elements that are novel in science fiction. The places you go are pretty common… There is no air for everyone in the ship, algae cultivation capable of producing oxygen, surprise guest… Nevertheless, Joe Penna, with the help of its remarkable cast, it manages that this is not a burden and manages to carry us in flight during the almost two hours of duration. It has a nice way of making us feel like we are inside that ship, it isolates us even from the voices of communications coming from the Earth … We only hear them clearly right at the beginning, at takeoff, then they are mere practically inaudible murmurs.
We will talk about the cast, it cannot be otherwise in a film that, as I say, consists only of only 4 characters. Toni Collete, what about this woman. He has delivered me. I was in the middle of the film thinking that in this movie it was just perfect as always, but without the big fanfare to which we are accustomed (sorry, I’m a bore, I have to rename Hereditary and I’m thinking of quitting), but in the last section he loses his hair and offers us its most intense version.
I doubted something about Anna Kendrick, because I had never seen it in a film of this genre, but I have to say that it does very well and gives the character the exact point that he required. Daniel Dae Kim, my dear Jin of Lost, I also believe that it solves perfectly at all times. The only one who fails me a bit is the stowaway, played by Shamier Anderson, which took me out of the movie at times because of the chuckling tone with which he endows his character.
So, in summary, Stowaway It would be a light but well-executed dish … some good bolognese spaghetti made with great produce and well seasoned. Good taste and pleasant digestion, but you won’t remember them as one of the best bites of your life.
