Netflix does not rest, despite having released the first part of the highly anticipated season 5 of ‘La Casa de Papel’, the platform of streaming continues efforts to start new productions of its own that manage to capture the attention of the audience and end up becoming global phenomena.
For this, on many occasions Netflix uses the strategy of hiring great directors and financing their projects to be able to premiere them exclusively on its platform. It happened to multi-award winning David Fincher who produced and directed the series’Mindhunter‘or with Martin Scorsese himself and his latest premiere’ The Irishman ‘.
On this occasion, Netflix has decided to recruit the ‘Oscar winner’ Guillermo Del Toro. The Mexican director, who has made his fortune in the world of cinema for such renowned works as ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’ and ‘The Shape of Water’, will be in charge of producing and directing a new horror series entitled Guillermo Del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities (The cabinet of curiosities of Guillermo Del Toro in Spanish).
Ode to the horror genre
This new audiovisual production will be inspired by a compilation book of horror stories published by the filmmaker himself in 2013. It will be an anthological series, which will present a plot and different characters in each chapter. Thus, each episode will explore elements of terror and the strange that have always based Del Toro’s cinema, through several short stories by the reference of Gothic literature HP Lovecraft and original narrations by the director.
Among the cast of actors already announced that will be part of the series, names such as Andrew Lincoln (The Walking Dead), Essie Davis (Babadook), Ben Barnes (Westworld) or Hannah Galway (Sex / Life) stand out. But the stars in this series are not limited to in front of the camera. Behind her will be names of the relevance of Tim Blake Nelson (Watchmen), Jennifer Kent (Babadook), Crispin Glover (Back to the future), Panos Cosmatos (Mandy) or Hayley Z Boston (Hunters).
The series will address an “unprecedented collection of stories of the genre and will challenge traditional notions of horror,” explains the press release published by Netflix. The production will turn between “the gothic and grotesque to the classic fear, passing through the macabre and the magical”. In addition to Guillermo Del Toro, who has selected the entire team that participates in the series, there will be J. Miles Dale (The Shape of Water) who will work as co-director.
Filming in progress
The filming of Guillermo Del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities has already started in the city of Toronto, Canada. Although no release date for the production has been made official, it is estimated that the 8-part series could be ready for late 2022 or early 2023. Before that, we will be able to enjoy a new feature film by the Mexican filmmaker, El carnival thriller Nightmare Alley, which will be released in late 2021.
