The real Cape Cod vampire murders are as terrifying as you’d expect

American Horror Story has just started airing its tenth season and has returned to a vampire theme for the first time since Hotel. Red Tide, the first half of a season called American Horror Story: Double Feature, has ushered in the new era with a couple of episodes that are the best and scariest AHS has felt in years. And much of that is due to the gruesome true crime murders that have seemingly inspired the central, bloodthirsty plot.

Red Tide takes place in Provincetown, a Cape Cod town in Massachusetts, the perfect setting for the icy vampiric horrors that haunt the new season’s central family. But what makes the scenario scarier are the brutal murders of eight women that occurred a 10-minute drive from the actual Provincetown, committed by a man dubbed the Cape Cod Vampire.

Who was the Cape Cod vampire?

In 1969, several bodies of murdered and dismembered women were found. The district attorney in Truro, the small town where the killings occurred, said the women’s hearts had been removed, “cut off in as many places as there were joints,” and claimed bite marks were found on all of the bodies. which led to the press to call the culprit the Cape Cod vampire.

Red Tide vampires lurk everywhere in Provincetown

The suspect in the murders was Antone “Tony” Costa, a carpenter who used the garden where the bodies were buried to hide drugs. Costa was arrested and jailed after being convicted of the murder of two women, but Costa has maintained that he was not the culprit and wrote in prison that his alter ego known as Carl was responsible for the murders. Helltown, a novel about murder, is about to be adapted into a series after Robert Downey Jr’s production company acquired the rights.

What are the similarities to American Horror Story: Red Tide?

American Horror Story: Red Tide is a horror story about drug use, addiction, infection, and vampirism. The central character of Harry, played by Finn Wittrock, is a writer who upon moving to Provincetown quickly finds himself embroiled in a story of murder, drug addiction, and writers struggling to do the unthinkable for success.

When Harry is sucked into the world of creativity-promoting drugs, its side effects turn him into a bloodthirsty creature who craves blood and doesn’t act like the Harry his family knows, similar to the Cape Cod vampire who claims he was his alter-ego. who did the murders. American Horror Story: Red Tide directly references the Cape Cod vampire in its opening scene, where Harry tells his wife Doris about a murder that happened in Truro, where a family was found dead in their beds with neck injuries.

Is American Horror Story season 10 good so far?

At this point, it is difficult to get a complete picture of the quality of the season, because the Double Feature is divided into two halves. However, Red Tide is off to a considerably menacing start that has its best cast members doing what they do best. The camp and fan service AHS has been notorious for in recent seasons seems to be out of the window in favor of genuine threat and terror, and the show feels so much better about it.

The surroundings soak up your skin, with its cold seaside wind rattling through the faded beauty of the wooden facades of Provincetown homes. The streets are crawling with infected vampires known as the Pale Ones, who appear to attack the community either by day or by night. One of the scariest sequences takes place in broad daylight, when Doris (Lily Rabe) and she and Harry’s daughter Alma are relentlessly pursued by a twisted vampire hell-bent on sinking their teeth into their teeth. It’s a really scary thing.

Mysterious Provincetown, as featured in Red Tide

There is a claustrophobia in American Horror Story: Red Tide that Leila Latif, writing for The AV Club, rightly compares to the Covid pandemic. Characters are stuck, feel uncreative, and separate from each other in their conversations. The speech in the conversations quickly changes from arguing about who is the most important race to who was the real villain in Jaws. Latif puts it excellently when he writes “what at first seemed like a fun riff of ‘Overlook Hotel by the sea’ is actually much more interesting: a story that takes all the anxieties of the time when it was made and reflects them in new to us. »A good time awaits us with American Horror Story: Red Tide and the vampire story that he has in store for us.
