A network of glass eel traffickers, which operates between France and Asia, has been dismantled, as announced on Friday June 11 by the national gendarmerie. This network is suspected of having exported more than 46 tonnes of this endangered migratory fish. The illegal trade in this eel fry, sold at a high price, has made it possible to launder 18.5 million euros.

The investigation, carried out for four years by the customs of Bordeaux and the Central Office for the fight against attacks on the environment and public health (Oclaesp), led to the indictment of ten people in France. and in Spain, reports the national gendarmerie in a press release.

Poaching and resale of this translucent fry, mainly to Asian markets, has intensified since the early 2010s, as it was decided, in 2010, to ban its export outside the European Union ( EU) in order to protect it. Petty criminals and seasoned receivers thus share a booty estimated at several hundred million euros per year. Many of these transcontinental sectors are taking root in France.
