Dancer Sae Eun Park named star of the Paris Opera

On social networks, compliments are jostling to greet the appointment, Thursday, June 10, of the dancer Sae Eun Park to the rank of star of the Opéra national de Paris. “My beautiful Sae Eun, you know how much I love your dance and your person. Yesterday evening, once again, you shone in your magnificent role, and this time, your brilliance was rewarded with a title commensurate with your work and your talent ”, says star Léonore Baulac on Instagram. “Congratulations to the magnificent Sae Eun Park, new principal dancer”, enthuses the star Paul Marque, his partner in the ballet Romeo and Juliet, choreographed by Rudolf Nureyev, on display at the Opéra Bastille.

It is in this complex three-hour marathon work that the artist was named by Alexander Neef, director of the institution, on the proposal of Aurélie Dupont, director of dance. During this first performance of Romeo and Juliet, Thursday evening, Sae Eun Park and Paul Marque replaced the couple Léonore Baulac and Germain Louvet, injured. “It was a very nice surprise, says Sae Eun Park. There is always an expectation of this appointment but you never know when it will happen and if it will happen one day. It was unexpected to be distributed at the premiere. But with Paul Marque, we were very prepared. I really wanted to “go”. “

A unique journey

Born in Seoul (South Korea) in 1989, Sae Eun Park has a unique background. She took her first lessons at the Korean National Ballet Academy, from 2006 won numerous medals in competitions including that of Jackson (United States), Beijing (China), Lausanne (Switzerland). She joined the American Ballet II in New York, where she distinguished herself in the repertoire of George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins, then returned to her country to dance in the national company.

In 2011, she passed the external competition to enter the corps de ballet of the Opéra national de Paris and passed it. “In Korea, my school taught the Russian Vaganova method and there are many differences with the Paris Opera in the technique of the feet, the arms, the musicality…, she specifies. I worked a lot, watched videos to adapt to the style of the French school while keeping my personality. I love to learn. It is a characteristic of my culture. “

Since then, Sae Eun Park has climbed the ranks of the hierarchy. She illuminated, among other things, the room Quartet n ° 4, by Bela Bartok, choreographed by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, on display in 2015, at the Palais Garnier. A sharp technician, restrained but vibrant temperament, she was named first dancer in 2017. Also performing in the great classical ballets, from Giselle at Raymonda, that in contemporary pieces by Marco Goecke for example, she particularly likes dramas like Onegin, by John Cranko. Sae Eun Park will once again perform the role of Juliet, “A character opposite to what I am”, with Paul Marque, in Romeo and Juliet, Wednesday 16, Saturday 19 and Wednesday 23 June, at the Opéra Bastille.
