Emmanuel Macron dismisses environmental ambassador Yann Wehrling

The sanction did not take long. Nine days after being warned by the Foreign Ministry that Emmanuel Macron was considering ending his mission, Ambassador Yann Wehrling was effectively dismissed by the Council of Ministers held on Wednesday, June 9. “On the proposal of the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs”, Jean-Yves Le Drian, “The functions of Ambassador Delegate for the Environment exercised by Mr. Yann Wehrling are terminated”, indicates the board report. This is the only individual measure formalized on Wednesday.

Yann Wehrling is the second environmental ambassador chosen and then dismissed by Emmanuel Macron. In January 2020, the government had already terminated the functions of Ségolène Royal as ambassador of the poles, given the very critical public speeches of the latter with regard to the policy of Emmanuel Macron.

Former national secretary of the ecological party Les Verts, who moved to the MoDem in 2008, Yann Wehrling was appointed in December 2018 ambassador delegate for the environment, a paid position. Alongside Ségolène Royal, for the poles, and Brigitte Collet, for the climate, he was to deal particularly with biodiversity, and follow all the international negotiations on the subject for France. For the macronists, this appointment of a former head of the Greens was part of a global strategy of political recomposition, and sent a positive signal to voters sensitive to ecology.

“Partisan considerations”

Now the movement is reversed. “Each year, an environmentalist leaves the majority, exclaims Yann Wehrling. After Nicolas Hulot in 2018, [le député du Maine-et-Loire] Matthieu Orphelin in 2019, [le député de Paris et mathématicien] Cédric Villani in 2020, it’s my turn. At the beginning of the term of office there was a hope in which many had believed. I have held on so far. But today, the presidential majority has decided to sever our relationship of trust. This move further alienates progressive environmentalists from the majority. “
